Cowering at home for three years as Burning Man prep

Most of the folks whom I’ve met at Burning Man (attended in 2014 and 2015) were California residents. Thus, some of the Americans who most enthusiastically embraced school closures and lockdowns have found themselves stuck for an extra day or two on the Playa. Cowering at home from 2020 through 2022 could be considered prep for this year’s Burning Man, in which the car gate was closed by authorities due to deep mud.

A couple of tweets from the organizers:

The airport closed on Saturday, supposedly, but there are no NOTAMs for 88NV in the official FAA system. An AvWeb story:

(Note the “shelter in place” phrase, mirroring the language of the San Francisco mayor in 2020: “Homeless individuals are not subject to the shelter in place order”)

From 2015, not the best leggings for mud… (my original caption: “Russian journalist”):

Maybe a good mud vehicle?

A hard “no” on this one:

This probably wouldn’t work either…

  1. “Dr” Phil:

Of course you’ve been to Burning Man. Are you are the typical idle-rich, fly-in fly-out, don’t-contribute-anything tech-bro that Burners complain about? What did you add to the community?

    • Mike: your question “What did you add to the community?” doesn’t make sense to ask of an individual who was part of a camp. For everyone walking by, our camp operated a human gyro, a variety of DJ/cocktail events, and a Moroccan lounge. Everything in our camp was set up, maintained, taken down, and cleaned up by campers.

Your question also violates Principle 1 of Burning Man: “Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.” https://burningman.org/about/10-principles/

A better question for me is “What did you take from the community?” The answer is thousands of dollars in cash money. It’s supposed to be a “gift economy”, but quite a few women carry emergency cash reserves and they were happy to spend it paying me to put my shirt back on.

    • Mike: I’m not aware of any tech-bro with a blog like this one. I come here to escape from the tech-bros!

Tech bros are group animals and would not have a blog with independent thoughts. A tech bro would not criticize Bankman Fried (who is> a tech bro) or the beloved Silicon Valley Bank.

A tech bro would not openly criticize unlimited immigration. A tech bro certainly would not criticize government handouts. It’s one of their primary source of income, no matter whether the handouts are given directly through DARPA or indirectly through SVB bailouts, pumping up the stock market or various “emergency” funds.
