Way back in March of this year (i.e., not during Pride) we were driving from Coral Gables to Jupiter in a Biblical Florida rainstorm. It began to feel unsafe and we’d seen a few accidents so I pulled off the highway in Deerfield Beach to check radar, maybe switch drivers, and possibly simply wait out the rain. I spotted a Target and we decided to make that our rest stop. As we stretched our legs by strolling around the store, our 11-year-old old grabbed a Stella Rosa “Love Series” rainbow-flagged Prosecco bottle and said, “Hey, Dad, for you!”
(One offer rejected by the kids: watching the Disney live-action Snow White movie. In other words, they preferred to die on I-95 than to watch Rachel Zegler.)
I managed to find it on the Target web site later that evening:
Happy Pride, then, to all who celebrate!
Question for Tesla owners: How well does full self-driving work in rain that is heavy enough to force Interstate drivers to slow down to about 40 mph?
Zegler wasn’t bad in the hunger games. The mane problem with Snow White was how boring it was.
In the meantime, trans athletes are making history [1] (headline is one thing, history is another). If it is considered fair for biological males to compete in female divisions, why aren’t trans or non-binary individuals eligible to compete in the Paralympics? If discrimination is truly the concern, then selectively applying “inclusion” standards is B.S.
OK, I hear you, it is fair to say the Paralympics should not be part of this comparison. But that raises another question: if fairness and inclusion are the guiding principles of why trans cannot not be excluded, then why is it acceptable to discriminate based on age in sports? Why cannot an 18-year-old compete against 10-year-olds? We recognize that age categories exist to preserve fairness, but not for trans?
While we’re at it, let’s address another form of discrimination that society seems to accept without question: age categories and restrictions in competitions like the Spelling Bee. Why is it that a 15-year-old cannot compete against an 8-year-old? If the goal is fairness and inclusion, shouldn’t all age groups be allowed to compete together?
We have rules and guidelines in place to ensure that society functions. When those rules are disregarded, the structure begins to break down, it is as simple as that. This isn’t about targeting trans individuals or the LGBTQ+ community. If the goal is true equality, then it is important to also acknowledge the rights and fairness owed to others. Just as the Paralympics created a separate category to ensure fair competition, trans need to do the same.
