Happy No Kings Day to those who celebrate. Also Happy 79th birthday to King Donald I and Happy 250th birthday to the U.S. Army, founded on June 14, 1775 as part of the treasonous rebellion against legitimate British rule.
A Deplorable Californian sent me this event calendar from Grace Cathedral in San Francisco:
Pack up the kids because the online calendar shows that it is almost time for the “Drag Queen Story Hour for families and children” in the East Bay:
If you’re going to stay in the City, the cathedral itself is hosting “Queer Religion: The Exhibition”:
As a queer atheist Marshall wants to spotlight and celebrate prominent openly queer leaders in religion. These subjects risk so much personally in order to live in their truth and create positive change within the monotheistic religions. The subjects captured provide a safe space within institutions that historically have promoted queerphobia.
“Without a bit of queerness, religion can grow rigid and sour. Queer people and perspectives offer renewal, an opening out to those who would otherwise turn away. The ultimate queerness we can approach is the divine, the totally other which is also the elusive meaning within ourselves.” — Rabbi Mark Solomon
Maybe this wise rabbi has the explanation for why a lot of things don’t work out, i.e., due to “without a bit of queerness”.
In Boston, the assumption is that everyone who hates Kings also loves 2SLGBTQQIA+ (Boston.com) because the suggested way to demonstrate against Kings is to show up on the route of the Pride parade:
The groups are calling the demonstration alongside the Pride parade, “No Kings, but Yaaas Queen!” Spectators at the Pride parade are being encouraged to bring “Pride flags and signs showing steadfast support for LGBTQIA+ rights and protesting the tyranny of a fascist administration that seeks to erase our communities from public life, American history, and our nation’s future.”
The US Army may have been founded 250 years ago, but today is not its 250th anniversary. The army was disbanded for several years after the Revolutionary war. The same is true of the Navy, founded in October of 1775.
The USMC, founded November 10th, 1775, is the only service in continuous operation. Marines (I am a former Marine) will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Corps this fall.
I’m sure the LGBTQIA+ community plans a big celebration to mark the day.
For the record: I am a veteran of the USMC that served most of his time on active duty in Southern California. I protected the beaches of Orange County from the Soviet menace.
@Mike this is for 79th birthday …..
It was a great parade. Great show, very nice, I loved it. Mike, do US Marines march often for training? I hated marching part of military training. I see that US Marines have several types of uniforms, including grand parade uniform, with swords. Did you have to do a lot of marching training? Or is it reserved for US Marines guarding US embassies and such?
Anon, doubt it was for 79th. Trump at his 79 had to heroically suffer hours standing at attention, and he also gave an eloquent speech praising US military and service members and going through brief US Army history, nothing about aggrandizing himself.
Perplexed…
We, in what was called the Fleet Marine Corps, or the operating units, did very little formal drill. I think, I was an officer, wore my sword only one time past my introductory training.
If you ever get to Washington, D.C. during the summer, going to see the Friday evening parade at Marine Barracks at 8th & I is well worth your time. You will get a good sample of Marine Marching.
I think the only Marines that really do the whole marching thing are the Marines at 8th and I and the Marines that are on bereavement duty. Fleet Marines don’t do that much marching.
From Facebook group: My liberal friends are always telling me to have more empathy. And I can see the pain they are feeling over the Trump Birthday Parade. So I created a browser plugin that will change “Trump Birthday” to “Gay Pride.”
Instead of “government spends $40 million on Trump Birthday Parade” you’ll now see “government spends $40 million on Gay Pride Parade.”
You’ll all be much happier.
Hahahaha! That is very funny!
There has been extensive coverage about the military parade and its estimated cost, ranging anywhere from $25 million to $100 million. However, there is no mention of the costs incurred by local cities and towns to host the “No King” parades held in over 2,000 locations.
All that public spending, on logistics, security, road closures, cleanup, and the impact on local businesses, surely adds up, yet there is no reporting on its overall cost or impact. I even tried searching on Google but could not find any analysis or estimates.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
Holy Toledo, how low the once-promising have fallen. This is it?
