“Mask mandates return in parts of the Bay Area as virus season nears” (San Francisco Chronicle via Yahoo! News):
Mask requirements are returning to health care settings across parts of the Bay Area, as local health officials brace for the annual surge in respiratory illnesses – including COVID-19, influenza and RSV – that typically arrives with colder weather.
Starting Nov. 1, several counties – including Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Napa, San Mateo and Santa Cruz – will again require health care workers, and in some cases patients and visitors, to wear masks in patient care areas through the winter and early spring.
What about the county that will be hosting a COVID-19 superspreader event soon (the Super Bowl)?
Santa Clara County’s rule goes further, requiring everyone – workers, patients and visitors – to wear masks in “patient care areas” of hospitals, clinics and nursing homes.

I have been wearing a mask in public since 2018. Yesterday I went to the store without mine so the cute clerk who seems to have a crush on me would see my ugly face and give up. She wasn’t there, and the male clerk seemed even more friendly. I felt naked, disgusting, and apparently attractive to males, so donned the mask again. So I say, “Atta boy/girl/non-binary Bay Area!”
I just arrived at the Philadelphia airport via American Airlines. I made it about 20 feet into the terminal before I saw my first three maskers (zero sighted at PBI).
When I went to vote yesterday I had the misfortune of having someone in a mask lead me to the voting machine and explain the instructions. She literally sounded like Charlie Brown’s teacher but as I am a veteran of the process I simply nodded and did my business. However, if I was a neophyte it would have presented a challenge
Thanks, SN. I hope that you voted for Ayatollah Mamdani!
@philg
LOL I am a resident of the Garden State not the Empire State although we do have a governor’s race on the ballot (us and Virginia have our state elections in odd-numbered years). As an aside I want to thank you and your readers for the explanation of the difference between Fortran and Cobol. Perhaps at some point I would look for a video that would show some common application being coded in each language. I remember when I used to subscribe to Family Computing and would type in the programs for my C64 and sometimes look to see how that same program was coded for Apple II, IBM, Atari, TRS80, &c
“New York, New York” remastered:
Ivan, Ayatollah Mamdani barely bench presses 135 lb once with assist, with a face expression indicating struggle striving simultaneously for both the highest stage of jihad and final stage of communism. In my advanced I use significantly more for repeated biceps curls and behind the neck press. It is a slander of the Romans to depict him as a Roman emperor. Maybe as Lord Farquaad, but he seems to be too tall for that. Lord Farquaad inside, hope it does not constitute infringement of Intel copy rite.
Anything is better than the TSA. Don’t know how ‘Spun can stand spending most of his life in part 121 instead of general aviation.
In Florida – I haven’t worn a mask since April 2020. And that was only because I thought I was going to get assaulted for not wearing one during a trip to Walmart.
@perplexed: “Ayatollah Mamdani barely bench presses 135 lb once”
At my peak, I weighed 165 lbs (at 6-0 ft) at age 24, and could do a 1X max bench of 215 lbs. Now, almost 40 years later, I weigh 155 lbs. and can barely bench 135 lbs. 1X. My strength is slowly leaving me. Though this AM, I did ten strict palms-forward chin-ups, and I do a “sprint” triathlon next month (800 yd open water swim, 13 mi. bike, 5K run) and will be competitive for my age group.
@DP, since preteens and by my peak, at age of 20-22, and before, I never really lifted anything besides one hand presses of 70 lb kettlebell and iron game play with 55 lb kettlebell and general exercises with human bodyweight and sometimes extra weight neck load used for strength and endurance in wrestling, boxing and martial arts, interrupted by periods of chess playing, studying, working as computational mathematician and programmer (started early, similar to Philip, I learned both advanced math and programming before college) and mandatory military service. At my peak I was over-fit, could do 50 straight chin-up (probably more, but I was bored at 50), 300 push-ups and had depressed body weight of 145 lb. After 22 I gave up athletics and went to gym to manage my sedentary lifestyle, I did not want to hurt myself but could do easily do 12 repetitions of 280 lb unassisted bench presses, 405 lb dead-lifts and repeated 800 lb leg presses, at 160 lb body weight. Since then periods of long hours of work, eating more calories then needed and remediate periods of gym membership to address it resulted in my weight increase south of 220 lb. I still can do several chin-ups, over 100 push-ups, bench press over 225lb repeatedly and deadlift 275 – 305 lb; I can leg-press more now, my legs got stronger then before due to hiking/biking with increased body-weight. I do not think that I could do a triathlon though. Maybe when retire and loose weight. Joints are a major concern, my cumulative injuries now are coming home to roost. Still, I am a happy mature adult.
@perplexed: That is impressive!
Not impressive in comparison to those with whom I was going to the gym. Except maybe for some of legwork, but it is not the best either.
