A two-page spread on the WNBA from Guinness World Records 2026:
What else from the world of sports merits two pages? All of the combined achievements of the NBA, MLB, the NFL, and the NHL:
An algebra lesson for kids:
- WNBA = NBA+NFL+MLB+NHL
- WNBA=4*NBA
- WNBA=4*NFL
- WNBA=4*MLB
- WNBA=4*NHL
The cover:

Are players in the WNBA limited to women? Google “brittney griner topless”, then ponder “what is a woman?”.

Nah, I’m good–don’t need to see that, even though I do like my ladies tall.
I guess I’m confused, though. How is Phil extending the literature here? Hasn’t the abstract algebra of identity politics assigned all the W, B, and LGBTMNOPQ worth operators to X -> Y * X, where Y >= 4? Isn’t that known?
Wikipedia > In mathematics, an operator is generally a mapping or function that acts on elements of a space to produce elements of another space (possibly and sometimes required to be the same space).

Short King, based on what I am recalling from abstract algebra, operators are relationships defined on sets. For example, ring structure requires two defined operations and ring could be a subset of space. So to be strict you need to define what * operation on your identity space mean.
Since we have only 5 elements, WNBA (=4?), NBA (=1?, since WNBA = 4 *NBA for regular multiplication), NFL = 0, MLB = 2, NHL = 3 would not work for following system: WNBA=4*NBA, WNBA=4*NFL, WNBA=4*MLB, WNBA=4*NHL . I can make * rule base but I will pass it onto you since I really do not watch sports that match
They don’t get paid much, look at the famous number 1 pick last year, who is far more famous than the league itself

Plenty of glory (2 pages in Guinness) and almost no money.
Dr. Greenspun gets amused very easily, it looks like. Here’s how I see it:
When a society likes to jump on conclusions, doesn’t reflect before making decisions and overall gets emotional, it’s very easy to manipulate.
What’s the difference between “hearing” something once, like in a research paper and “hearing” it a bunch of times, possibly involving more senses, like eyes, ears etc.? Your mind starts believing it’s true, unless you are a bit detached and reflect on what you’re “hearing”. This is how all media has been polluting the minds of emotional societies forever by dishing out propaganda.
And I would like to make another observation. If the newspapers and books here are using the technique, I would like to believe it works well on an average.
Only the lucky few will ever hug someone as tall & dominant as Caitlin Clark. They all marry trillionaires & make their fortune the usual way.
Caitlin is listed as six feet tall, which is a 1-in-500 height among white American women. One of my former students isn’t quite as tall but she was the leading scorer in her county when she was a senior and is now playing at a D3 school with excellent academics. Her father is an attorney who played at Princeton so she may follow in his footsteps
> WNBA = MLB+NFL+MLB+NHL
You accidentally included MLB twice here and omitted NBA
Fixed. Thanks! I was a math undergrad so this is embarrassing!
