Suppose that Rahmanullah Lakanwal hadn’t shot and killed National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom nor shot Andrew Wolfe (currently in the hospital), as he recently did. How was admitting him and multiple family members to the U.S. under the Biden-Harris administration and granting him and his family permanent residence (asylum) under the current Trump administration supposed to make the typical American better off? We are informed that immigrants enrich us, but how specifically did Congress and federal bureaucrats envision that Rahmanullah Lakanwal was going to enrich us??
Separately, just a few hours after successful asylum-seeker Rahmanullah Lakanwal waged jihad in Washington, D.C., the United Nations reminded us that “Asylum is Life-Saving”:
The New York Times reminds us that the real victim here was Rahmanullah Lakanwal:
The same story makes it sound as though Rahmanullah Lakanwal loved marijuana and polygamy (“second wife”):
Mr. Lakanwal was part of that program and had resettled with his family in Washington State. … Muhammad, Mr. Lakanwal’s childhood friend, said he has last seen him a few weeks before the Taliban takeover in 2021, when Mr. Lakanwal came to Khost to marry his second wife. He had started smoking weed, Muhammad said, and ended up divorcing his new wife a few days after the wedding. Muhammed recalled that Mr. Lakanwal told him: “When he saw blood, bodies, and the wounded, he could not tolerate it, and it put a lot of pressure on his mind.”
Of course, there are quite a few U.S. states in which one can enjoy (“essential” during coronapanic) marijuana 24/7, but I’m not sure how Rahmanullah Lakanwal was going to earn enough to hang onto two female partners. I can’t find any story describing Rahmanullah Lakanwal as having a job.
Finally, let’s keep in mind that though Rahmanullah Lakanwal might end up with 100 U.S. citizen grandchildren (“with his family” implies that he came here with at least one wife and average total fertility rate in Afghanistan is around 5 (five children in a woman’s lifetime; not too many men become “pregnant people” in Afghanistan)) and Sarah Beckstrom’s genetics died with her, it wouldn’t be accurate to say that Sarah Beckstrom and her hypothetical descendants were “replaced” by Rahmanullah Lakanwal (still alive) and his actual descendants.

In case the UN tweet is memory-holed:

How did Mamdani’s family immigration beneftit US? Is US really short on politicians and national and student debt increasing so called social so called sciences so called professors aka dumb liars? I think the way US politicians including current administration understand – by bringing subversive cash from Qatar, entity empowered by US driving out British from owning gulf oil which British discovered and developed. Chicken are coming back to roost to every home.
If he couldn’t handle violence, why did he sit in his Washington State apartment playing Call of Duty all day?

Steve: I hadn’t seen this before I wrote the original post, but it looks like the conjecture about five children is correct (though the guy is only 29 years old and, thus, still has time to accumulate additional wives and children).
For folks who are passionate about the affordable housing crisis, it’s perhaps interesting to note that Rahmanullah Lakanwal’s immigration should end up requiring at least six public or taxpayer-funded housing units in the near term. Afghan-Americans have the lowest income of any immigrant group and, therefore, all five of his children are likely to have incomes that qualify them for taxpayer-funded housing.
Academic geniuses: “Analysis of ACS data from 2006–2015 finds that, with controls, Afghan refugees’ earned incomes are the lowest of seven refugee/immigrant comparison groups. Given the robust set of controls, we hypothesise that anti-Muslim discrimination is an important unmeasured explanatory factor …” (it can’t be that Afghans are unproductive and have less value to employers, nor that Afghans are satisfied with the welfare standard of living and therefore don’t seek work; discrimination is the only possible explanation)

The media coverage is damn near worthless, but 1 video showed the shooter getting tackled where the lion kingdom was in October: 841 17th St. Got on the train to Eisenhower Ave there. Any motive you can imagine is probably right, based on this media coverage. Never did figure out why the national guard was deployed.
> Seeking asylum is a fundamental human right for people fleeing violence, persecution, war or disaster.
In other words, those who cannot stand up for themself and defend their own country and must instead flee violence of their country to be protected by another nation, isn’t the UN admitting that asylum seekers are useless and cowards?
A friend’s father lives in Odessa, Ukraine and has refused to leave despite entreaties from his offspring. He has passports that would entitle him to live in the West. He thinks that all support should be withdrawn from Ukrainian asylum-seekers and that they should all be sent back to Ukraine to be productive contributors to Ukrainian society and war effort.
I see where you’re coming from, and I can imagine my parents’ generation in India doing the same. Many people who grew up in the pre-globalization world acted with a concept of honour towards their country, and it is indeed honorable to the idea of nationalism. Here’s an attempt at defending the asylees’ point of view:
What’s the point in living in a nation and calling it part of the “East,” when it is de facto being a pawn of the West anyway? The Ukrainians who are fighting the war are fighting it with Western weapons; their president openly says that it’s as much a war of the West as it is Ukraine’s, even when they share a very long history with Russia because of geographical proximity and a shared political history. There has been ample evidence that the West egged the Ukrainians on to not negotiate with Russia. Even if Ukraine “wins” the war, it would have a bunch of Western companies splitting its assets. The “East” the previous generation thinks of doesn’t exist; it’s already the “West,” and the concept of nationalism as it existed before doesn’t exist anymore because of how things work when super-powers with nuclear tipped inter-continental ballistic missiles get involved. It is easy to mask brittleness and head-strongness with honor for the nation.
@PF, A good number of European countries are corrupt, and Ukraine is no exception. In fact, it ranks near the bottom of corruption indices [1].
Even during wartime, while fighting for the very survival of the country, corruption has continued to surface. Examples include high-profile firing and resignations: “Fall of Zelensky’s top aide – reboot for Kyiv or costly shake-up?” [2], “Top Ukrainian officials quit in anti-corruption drive” [3], “Ukraine fires military conscription officials for taking bribes” [4].

I emailed Greta T. to see if Sweden would offer me asylum from the the U.S., given my persecution as a political centrist and acerbic humorist . Didn’t hear back. Good to have U.N. support now, and now that she has returned from her Palestine flotilla, she can help me become the subject of a king. Yay!
