“My Cessna’s controls malfunctioned”

This article about last weekend’s Moosehead Lake seaplane fly-in (only two crashes) contains a great idea for any pilot faced with an FAA or NTSB inquiry:  “my flight controls malfunctioned”.  Anyway if you read the article you’ll find out why insurance companies don’t like seaplanes…

  1. “Pulling back on the yoke is supposed to make the plane go up, but the yoke malfunctioned and instead made the plane pitch down and spin”. This type of malfunction happens quite alot. Perhaps a class action suit against Cessna is in order.

  2. The perfect all around excuse.

Why did you run the red light?
    The car malfunctioned.

    Even better:
    I didn’t – your eyes malfunctioned.

  3. One can imagine the large yellow labeling required on future aircraft: Warning! Airplane can stall at any attitude. Do not rely on controls alone.
