Hillary Clinton’s election will worsen the gender pay gap?

One of Hillary Clinton’s main campaign points is that women don’t get paid, on average, as much as men. She’s about to make the “gender gap” stat worse, though, by quitting a $20 million/year job giving talks to Goldman Sachs et al. and taking a $400,000/year government job (President of the United States). So Hillary will be taking dramatic action, once in office, to address a problem that she herself exacerbated!

  1. Don’t be silly. Her real income will be larger if she becomes President, but most of the money will be laundered through others or deferred until she leaves office. I don’t think you understand her very well.

  2. Joe- I think that was Phil’s sarcastic point.. That Hillary, like other women, will complain about the injustice of being broke while taking it all to the bank.

  3. The gender pay gap is easily explained. I hired hundreds of people over many decades. Every man negotiated for higher pay. Not a single woman ever did. One guy didn’t accept my offer even though I increased it. Everyone else did.

When my friends talk about the gap, I mention this and universally women admit they aren’t comfortable with negotiating. Which in my opinion is an important aspect of almost any job, and if you can’t or won’t do it, even when its in your own best interest, then you’re not worth as much on the job.

Ellen Pao even sought to remove salary negotiations from applicants at her last job, because she recognized this as the source of the problem. I’m not sure that her solution was a good one.
