Trucking companies and window installers don’t want to save 23 percent on labor

“Facebook Accused of Allowing Bias Against Women in Job Ads” (nytimes):

The job seekers, in collaboration with the Communications Workers of America and the American Civil Liberties Union, filed charges with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Tuesday against Facebook and nine employers.

The employers appear to have used Facebook’s targeting technology to exclude women from the users who received their advertisements, which highlighted openings for jobs like truck driver and window installer.

Hillary Clinton:

20 years ago, women made 72 cents on the dollar to men. Today it’s still just 77 cents. More work to do. #EqualPay #NoCeilings

Putting these together, we conclude that trucking companies and window installation firms will go out of their way (targeting ads to men only) to avoid paying 23 percent less for qualified labor.

  1. PhilG: It is possible that Hillary Monstanto-Malmasion(sometimes known as Hillary Clinton) is right; if women only make 77% of the median taxable income that men make, there might be an explanation for why.

  2. What did you do, see that article in the Times and then search Hillary’s tweets? Did she write anything specifically about pay for truck drivers and window installers?

  3. Vince: Busted! I did search for “Hillary gender pay gap”.

But if equally qualified and productive women ARE paid less, why would a rational profit-seeking employer go to some effort to exclude such potential money-saving workers from a pool of job applicants?

That goes to my point. We need specific information about truck drivers and windows installers. If Hillary is the authority on such matters, we need to know what she thinks about those two particular occupations.

  5. There is a chance that men are just better at… earning money. Not necessarily better at getting the job done. (For instance, everybody knows that interviewing well is a separate skill.) Why is that of any importance? Why won’t we trust women to be competent enough to master those skills?

These are very generic statements about the whole population: it is quite likely that there are substantial individual variations inside each gender group as well as a significant overlap in the tails. There is Elizabeth Holmes and then there is Shafi Goldwasser. (If any male here thinks he can match Shafi in ability, we’d really like to know ASAP!) Trying to predict individual cases from the mean in this situation would be a sheer idiocy.

There are public speakers who choose to spread this kind of idiocy on the media; there are public speakers of any sort and it’s their constitutional right to speak their minds, so what?
