When the stability of a nation is in danger, the only solution is, unfortunately, to imprison the leaders of the opposition.

The NYT today (Democrats in New York are prosecuting the Trump Organization):

A 2007 post on this blog, “Idi Amin’s advice to Richard Nixon”:

My friend here in California has Talk of the Devil, Encounters with Seven Dictators by Riccardo Orizio.  The first interview is with Idi Amin.  Orizio reminds us that Amin sent a letter to Richard Nixon during the Watergrate crisis:  “When the stability of a nation is in danger, the only solution is, unfortunately, to imprison the leaders of the opposition.”

  1. The very first time a crowd at one of his rallies chanted: “Lock Her Up!” I knew he was DOOMED. It’s all been downhill from there.

    • He was doomed from the moment he didn’t lock her up. The Deep State had imnediately figured out that they can go full treason without any fear of consequnces just about then.

When your opposition screams at the top of their lungs that you’re a literal Hitler, it’s stupid not to behave like one.

    • @averros: Yeah I knew it was all part of the show. The people in the crowd really meant it though. Trump never had any intention of “Locking Her Up!” but it got his crowds in a lather and it was great theater. What he didn’t realize, I think, was that the Other Side was deadly serious about it, and SDNY might as well be called “Hillary Clinton’s Back Yard.” I’ve seen this before in smaller form. As Puddles the Clown sang “Hallelujah”: “I’ve seen this room. I’ve walked this floor. I used to live alone before I knew ‘ya.”

  2. If the case were any good it would have been brought by the Tax Division of the Justice Department in Washington — not by the Manhattan DA’s office, whose bread and butter are murders, rapes, robberies and petty drug crimes. And that the supposed “scheme” went on for 15 years and over that period no one dropped the dime until just now? And lawyers and accountants were not in good faith advising them over the years as how to expense things — a complete defense to what seem to be the charges? Sounds quite unlikely that there was much of a scheme. Another great use of NY taxpayer money along the lines of the State AG suing Exxon for fraud for failing to disclose something or other about global warming — the upshot was that the AG was reprimanded and the case tossed.

  3. Wow the guy who boasted about not paying taxes and being proud of it didn’t pay taxes?

Rare moment of honesty for him.

    • Oh come on it was just $950,000. And it’s nor like the guy was writing Trump Co chevks to himself to cash, which he pocketed to avoid paying income taxes on it. He had another employee cash them. As they say discretion is nine tenths of the law, amirite

  4. It’s like WWF wrestling then, not a con if everybody’s in on it?
