Karen nervously goes to SXSW

SXSW (like Burning Man, but with better barbecue) starts today. The COVID-19 policy could have been drafted by Andrew Cuomo and his young Science-following friends. Vaccine papers will be checked, including children over the age of 5 (for whom no FDA-approved vaccine exists, only an emergency use authorized medicine). How effective does Texas Karen think that the vaccines are?

Masks will be required in all conference session rooms, exhibitions, registration, and pre-function areas, and as determined by individual venues and client spaces.

Will SXSW accept a home-printed CDC vaccine card? Or a photograph of a home-printed and home-filled-out card? No.

SXSW is using the Clear App Health Pass to verify the vaccination status of credentialed participants.

My standard question applies… if Karen is worried enough to demand vaccine papers and that people wear face rags (cloth masks will, no doubt, meet the mask requirement), why doesn’t he/she/ze/they stay home and avail him/her/zir/theirself of the promised “online viewing and participation options”?

  1. some credentialed participants may stay up late and booze on 6th street and both of those activities can suppress the immune system and increase vulnerability to covid and then if they go to venues they can spread covid to Karen so Clear App Health Pass helps assuage anxiety.

  2. Policies to appease the most Covid-paranoid people in society who can never be appeased, and would never dare go to something like SXSW as long as a virus called Covid exists in the world. Meanwhile, normal people don’t want to go. It’s not really a compromise if you produce the worst possible outcomes for all parties involved.

  3. Peak pandemic the science said random sexual experiences with strangers was OK. I can’t imagine the science changed, only climates change, science is forever.

    • GB: More than “OK” in Maskachusetts! Boston schools were closed for more than a year, but Tinder didn’t shut down for even a minute.

  4. I’ve never been to SXSW or Burning Man. Somehow I missed it all back in the Glory Days when women were walking around basically naked with dance music blaring and when a spirit of radical libertarianism was all you really needed. Now it sounds like SXSW is more conformist and unquestioningly bound by Safe Spaceism Dogma and the various strains of Faucism than the teaching hospital where I had a major surgery recently. Even they didn’t require people going into surgery to be vaccinated, as long as they had a good explanation.

  5. Or maybe SXSW is now as free-spirited and Libertarian as the Chicago Police Department under the leadership of Lori Lighfoot. Maybe that’s a more appropriate comparison!
