National Basketball Association celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Our local public schools run fundraising events in which parents are urged to dine at particular restaurants on particular nights, with 10 percent of the revenue funneled back to the schools. At one of these events, a television was tuned to NBA TV.

The fine print at bottom: “Happy AAPI Heritage Month! The NBA family is dedicated to creating a diverse and inclusive environment both on and off the court. Each May, the NBA and its affiliate leagues celebrate the rich history, culture, and achievements of AAPI communities.”

Readers: What have you done this month to celebrate the achievements of Asians and Pacific Islanders on NBA teams?

(Separately, a friend says that he prefers to watch basketball games from South Korea. “The net isn’t high enough for modern American players,” he says, ” so they don’t have to be as creative as was required when the game was designed. The South Korean players aren’t as tall so they have to work harder and use more strategy.”)

  1. What have you done this month to celebrate the achievements of Asians and Pacific Islanders on NBA teams? Had the wonder soup dumplings at din tai fung!

  2. The goog says it’s 2SLGBTQQIA+ month again. We really need a GREENSPUN+ month.

  3. Japanese baseball is similar. The players are normal sized human beings with terrific athletic ability. Anytime in Japan during the season make sure to get tickets — even if you have no interest in baseball. Can buy them on line and pick them up at the stadium.

    • ^^^Sqrt(-1). Japanese pro baseball is the only form of the game I can watch anymore. American baseball – despite the fans roundly hating it – is being transformed into something…I don’t know what it is, but it’s not baseball as I remember it. Enormous salaries, all the technology just for its own sake, doping scandals, all the politics, etc., etc. They want hitters who can smash the ball so hard the particles emit radiation and whenever someone likes a team that isn’t PC for their party, it’s a spitting/shouting match. That’s always been true to some extent but it’s worse now – because it snags eyeballs and makes arguments, which is TV that writes itself. I’d rather watch little league games where I live. At least with Japanese ball you feel like you’re watching a *sporting event* not an overproduced commercial.

And the prices are stratospheric. I remember seeing the Yankees vs Red Sox at home in NY with a bunch of my fellow Boy Scouts on a group trip when I was a kid. We all had decent seats and everyone could afford them. As our society continues to stratify into some kind of North Bolivia, all this stuff is becoming fun for rich people. Baseball used to be a true sport for the Average Man, now the Forgotten Man.

What I want to know: What’s it going to be first – women in professional baseball or transsexuals? Or both? Will we have drag queen baseball cards? Nobody has tried it yet, but soon come.

Back to the OT: Nothing. Nada.

    • Oh, and don’t try to lead a prayer before or after a little league game in the wrong town. Some atheist Woke will complain, the coach will get fired or quit, the kids will have their great little game destroyed and thrust right into the epicenter of the culture wars, and everyone will curse the day they decided to try out. NPR and the Atlantic will weigh in with their experts, the New Republic will host a trip to Cuba so they can watch a game that hasn’t been despoiled by capitalism and Judeo-Christian false consciousness, Trump will grandstand by showing up uninvited, etc., etc.
