Why do Covidians gather en masse?

Our kids watched part of a Miami Heat v Celtics basketball game. 20,000 people gathered indoors, more or less on top of each other, in a sold-out TD Garden (in Boston’s North End). Hardly any fan had a mask on.

From 2020 through mid-2022, preventing deaths tagged to COVID-19 was important enough to Bostonians that they equired 5-year-olds to get injected with an experimental vaccine before going into public places, closed businesses (except “essential” marijuana stores), and required everyone (but especially children down to age 2) to wear masks.

It is the official position of Science that COVID-19 vaccines do not prevent infection by SARS-CoV-2 nor transmission of a SARS-CoV-2 infection. (There are also plenty of other lethal respiratory viruses that can spread when 20,000 people gather indoors.) Why were the Covidians of Boston willing to cram into this arena rather than #StayingHomeSavingLives and watching the game on TV?

The risk of a deadly mutation is increased every time that humans gather en masse. “No, the COVID-19 Pandemic Isn’t Over” (Cleveland Clinic, May 2023):

Simply put: If the virus is circulating, it’s also mutating. As we learned during the delta variant surge, some of those mutations can have devastating consequences.

Same idea in less clinical language:

I remain baffled by folks who say that they haven’t changed any of their Covidian opinions yet they’re doing everything possible to help SARS-CoV-2 spread and mutate. Can someone please explain this?

The Covidians who are still masking and/or staying in their bunkers strike me as more logically consistent. Here is a sampling:

I’m also not surprised when Floridians gather en masse. In 2020 they said that they were still going to attend school, work, and social events despite SARS-CoV-2 so it makes sense for them to be living in the same way now. But why did the Covidians change? It can’t be vaccinations. Nearly 200,000 Americans died with a COVID-19 in 2022, quite a few of them in a state of grace (after having received the Sacrament of Fauci).

(Separately, we were sad that Miami came in 2nd in the NBA Finals, but #2 isn’t terrible!)

  1. China’s virus enhancement program is a good reason for some animals to hide forever. ME CFS is serious business.

  2. I know that the science tells me that I should get plenty of sleep every night, I should eat well and I should exercise daily yet I often fail to do so.

    • Good that we have progressive Dr. Fauci to tell us about importance of nightly sleep, diet and exercise. Otherwise we would have give credit for healthy lifestyle slave-owning ancient know-nothing Galen and medieval reactionary obscurantist Maimonides for the same. Or even, may Marx save us, rely on own common sense, and it is after at least 16 years of progressive schooling

  3. Phil, silly you…Docter fauci invented a vaccine that prevents anyone from getting it…ever. This was after he “bent the curve” early on!

  4. I don’t fully understand the response from perplexed. I interpreted Phil’s question as “Why do people exhibit behavior that contradicts statements made by the same people?” – Don’t we see this all the time? My first response was the example of eating, sleeping and exercise where it is easy to speak the science but hard to practice the science. I don’t know anyone who has promoted texting while driving and nearly everyone will preach to you how bad it is, but I believe everyone at some point has been texting or manipulating their phone while driving. We all know sun exposure is bad for us but we still go to the beach. The examples are endless. So for me, the answer to the question Phil asked is that people behave this way because they are human, not Vulcan.

    • @David, you gave fine examples, such as: “We all know sun exposure is bad for us but we still go to the beach. The examples are endless.”

What puzzles me is this: we also know that exposing our kids to sub-qualified teachers is bad for them and the survivability of the country, but we still send them to schools with sub-qualified teachers and do nothing about it.

If “science” (“science” here is our leaders and folks who believe in the COVID sacrament) was able to see the catastrophic effect of COVID and come up with a vaccine, why we are not doing the same for education? Shouldn’t there be extreme measures taken to combat our failing education system?

It is ironic that I see our schools worried more about gender and LGBTQ crap education vs. basic reading and math.

  5. @Dave, what exactly science tells about eating, sleeping and exercise? Especially during periods of intensive scientific labor. I am puzzled. And how is it different from what church, party, drill sergeants and politicos and your grandmother told you about eating, sleeping and exercise? Now I am not even sure that you are true follower of #science since you are ignoring science when it comes to suggestion to store on sun-induced vitamin D in the summer.

  6. Answering the rhetorical question: In mid 2022 the politburo decided that the Wuhan Virus was over and instructed the mainstream press to spread the message. In 2023 The West [tm] is fighting against China, Russia and an occasional encore of UFOs and balloons.

  7. In related news, the recently discovered condition of Anything but the Vaccine has tragically struck again. Scientists are working hard to understand the mysteries of AbtV. Meanwhile, make sure you’re up to date with all your shots.

    • I wonder if the Georgetown Institute of Virology will have protections on the roof so fauci virus developers can’t fall off.

  8. I was at my local CVS today, and saw this sign:

    > Keep yourself and others safe during your visit.
    > Maintain a 6-foot distance from others
    > Face coverings are required for those who haven’t received their COVID-19 vaccination

Didn’t we conquer COVID and lifted the requirement for masks, lockdowns, and distancing?
How will they enforce that “Face coverings are required for those …”? There was no one at the front door asking for vaccination proof.

So, my question is, what’s the point of this sign? To whom is it intended? And what good is it serving?

    • A rational response to the news that fauci and his virus developers are setting up shop at the new Georgetown Institute of Virology?

  9. I’m sorry the sun is bad for you. It’s great for me. My ancestors evolved over the past 800,000 years or so to enjoy its celestial rays shining down upon me from above.

  10. The argument is not “is the sun good or bad for you?” – It is “If you believe it is bad for you, then why do you still go to the beach?”
