Being LGBTQ+ is a sign of mental health and also it is possible to plan a career in providing mental health services to the LGBTQ+

We’re coming to the end of Pride Month and there won’t be any additional 2SLGBTQQIA+ celebrations until July 6 when we celebrate Omnisexual Visibility Day (i.e., nearly a full week without a Pride-oriented holiday). Here’s a conundrum from X:

In one of the replies, the taxpayer-funded school notes “Damien will be returning to Brooklyn College this fall for a master’s in mental health counseling, aiming to become a therapist specializing in affirming, trauma-informed care for LGBTQ+ clients.” In other words, we are informed that (1) identifying as LGBTQ+ is not a sign of mental illness, and (2) it is possible to rely on a lifetime income stream from the poor mental health of people who identify as LGBTQ+.

Some images in case the above tweets are memory-holed:

  1. E [1] is apparently an experienced nanny:

My neighbors here in the northern Mid-Atlantic appeared on their porch with hillbilly muskets when they saw me walking down the street in my tie-dyed t-shirt–I don’t think eir outfit would work for me (or my wife, or our daughters) in our gated golf-course ‘hood.

(I hope my usage is grammatically and politically correct in this post.)

  2. You can build a career as a mental health counselor (aka “therapist”) catering to (almost?) any non-trivial population. Hetrosexual couples are a lucarative specialization. A lot of people are sufficiently anxious or depressed that it degrades their day to day life. A few have more extreme problems. Others have problems that may seem trivial to some (“my housekeeper does a shit job, but she’s a single mom and needs the money”) but are difficult for the individual.

  3. There are only 2 type of narratives we keep hearing over and over about LGBTQ+ folks or community:
    1) Self-congratulatory stories celebrating personal identity without broader societal contribution, or
    2) Accounts of suffering that highlight perceived injustices faced by LGBTQ+ individuals or the community.

And of course, the so-called do-gooders expect everyone to join in and embrace the LGBTQ+ movement, as if participation in their narrative is mandatory.

    • What would be a neutral expression in this regard. It looks like silence is not neutral. I mean, if undecided can be a stance of one’s gender, then why can’t it be a point of view towards anything.

    • @PhilG Fan, a truly neutral expression would be for the liberal media to also cover individuals and communities outside of the LGBTQ+ sphere or those so called oppressed.

    • Sure, that would be an expression of a neutral stance for the media, I agree. And what about an individual?

    • @PhilG Fan, an individual has limited power to gain attention or fame on their own. Most attempts through social media either fall flat or result in only brief, fleeting exposure. It is the media that does the heavy lifting. With their large audiences and established reputations, they control the narrative through editorial influence and so called “news” reporting.

Take, for example, the media’s current coverage of the “big beautiful bill,” or the internal dysfunction and infighting within the current administration. These issues are not new. Similar problems existed under previous administrations. Granted, this administration lacks restraint, but the liberal media is quick to amplify anything that discredits conservatives while downplaying or defending liberal shortcomings.

Case in point: Biden’s clear cognitive decline was obvious to many, yet the liberal media insisted otherwise for as long as they could.

    • Philosophically speaking this problem of popular media not reporting dispassionately is pretty old and known:

How I see it is that popular media inclined in a specific direction politically is for people who have already made their minds before they start listening.

To balance it out, there has been an emergence of independent media which can have truthful speakers who’re not getting space/time in the popular media.

For example, I have been following a few YT channels where Prof. Mearshiemer has been speaking about Ukraine-Russia war since before it started. He almost always has been speaking in a direction against what popular media takes, and has been mostly correct about Ukraine-Russia war.

Maybe Dr. Greenspun’s university-related posts can also be seen with a background obtained by doing `s/media/education system` in Chomsky’s video.

  4. While Damien is traditionally a male name, it is unclear whether this is Mr. Niesewand or Miss Niesewand. I asked Grok and they seem to think it would be Mx. Niesewand…

    • Hahahaha! Probably a rhetorical question, but here’s an answer to WebMD:

      https://www.webmd.com/sex/what-is-omnisexual

If attraction need not have a sexual component then we actually should have infinite genders, because people may be attracted to a beautiful theorem or proof, a piece of music, a couplet, rainfall, snow, forest, mountains, someone’s eyes, voice, just mediating on zeroness, etc.
