Tesla full self-driving (FSD) was great before and now is even greater:
“Elon Musk says Tesla Robotaxi launch will force companies to license Full Self-Driving” (Teslarati, June 20, 2025):
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says the automaker’s Robotaxi platform launch later this month will essentially force other companies to license Full Self-Driving to achieve their own goals of achieving autonomy.
The world is full of car companies, many of which are too small to fund autonomy. If Tesla FSD is as great as Tesla, Elon, and the Tesla fanboys say, why doesn’t any other car company want to license it? There are about 50 significant car and truck makers worldwide. Why doesn’t even one of these 50 want to rely on Tesla’s FSD?
From early this morning…
Phil, if you ask me I can quickly explain the reasons.
I would surmise that the spirited debate between Lidar and Camera sensors is one of the reasons that the other companies do not license the Tesla model. GM still remains committed to LIDAR (https://www.gm.com/innovation/av-safe-deployment?utm_source=chatgpt.com) whereas Tesla now has the cameras that have recorded the volume of data for processing and opposes LIDAR (https://www.cdotrends.com/story/4083/lidar-u-turn-elon-musks-fools-errand-becomes-teslas-secret-weapon?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
Speaking of self-driving will the Greenspun aviation department provide an assessment of the Helicopter emergency landing in Chelsea this past weekend?
Because there are actual suppliers like Baidu, now at 250K weekly robotaxi rides (same as Waymo) and Mobileye in the market with real rather than hypothetical tech and OEM relationships?
I have a 2021 Sienna and a 2022 Model Y without FSD. Their self-drive capabilities are remarkably similar in my experience. They both stay in lanes pretty reliably on the freeway, and they both have adaptive cruise control. The two main differences I see are
1. interface–it is quite a bit easier to activate Autopilot in the Tesla than cruise control with lane sensing in the Toyota.
2. market awareness–I feel like a much higher percentage of Tesla owners will know of and use Autopilot than the equivalent mode in the Toyota.
