Pregnancy explained by a science museum in a state that offers abortion care at any stage of pregnancy (Illinois)

As in Maskachusetts (old law; updated recently as noted below), a pregnant person’s pregnancy can be terminated in Illinois at any gestational phase via abortion care if the pregnant person’s mental health can be thus protected . (Given that any child has the potential to “drive a parent crazy”, any pregnancy in any pregnant person can be subjected to abortion care at any time.) Here are the rules explained by the City of Chicago, which notes that “People of all gender identities need access to safe abortion care.”

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry has an exhibit on “prenatal development” featuring preserved “specimens”:

The “specimens” can also be characterized as “fetuses”:

The museum strays from Illinois law and principles, however, in a slide show in which the legal-to-abort-at-any-time collection of cells is described as “another human being” or “this baby”:

ChatGPT’s mind is subtle enough to handle the apparent contradiction:

Yes, the exhibit uses “baby” in the ordinary prenatal sense, while Illinois law uses different categories for determining legal protection. That is a real linguistic tension, but not a formal legal contradiction. Immediately before delivery, a healthy 30-week fetus may colloquially be called a baby and could, under the statutory health exception, legally be subjected to an abortion intended to cause fetal death. Were the same child delivered alive instead, intentionally causing its death would not be abortion care and could be prosecuted as murder.

Meanwhile, “Massachusetts is close to giving doctors the final word on whether to perform late abortions” (state-sponsored WGBH):

Under current Massachusetts law, abortion is legal for the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. It is allowed after that only if a physician using best medical judgment says it is necessary to preserve the life, physical or mental health of the woman, because of a lethal fetal anomaly or diagnosis or because the fetus wouldn’t likely survive outside the uterus.

Under the new language, abortion would be legal at any point in pregnancy for any reason. It would leave it to health care providers whether or not to perform an abortion.

The state Senate adopted the measure Friday, sending it to Democratic Gov. Maura Healey, who has signed other laws strengthening abortion rights.

Here’s the follow-up:

The governor is a childless white women. She’s surrounded by apparently white women whose average total fertility is statistically minimal. The progressive overlords couldn’t find any token People of Color to help them celebrate the expanded abortion care availability?

  1. > The governor is a childless white women.

    But why, Phil, why?

You’d think she would want baby mommas to bring them to term for a supply of adoptable children for the ladies of Lesbos.

    • Don’t be foolish. You want a healthy surrogate. Will cost 10k to rent a Colombian’s womb

  2. I am just not sure why the line is drawn at this weird stage of pregnancy called birth. We already have euthanasia for old people. Why not have abortion after birth as well?

Is the parent who’s life is permanently altered by a child with autism or cerebral palsy (only noticeable once the baby isn’t moving as well as it should) not allowed to some form of recourse? Biologically that kid and the one 1 week before are the same. Just that one is still in the amniotic sac and the other isn’t.

These people are hypocrites. Same for the anti-abortion folk who put in exceptions for rape, incest, or don’t care about banning fertility treatments that create enormous numbers of zygotes and then destroy them (according to them, destroying a human).

    • Or, create a world where autistic and palsied incels are heroes. Gay/lesbian couples get extra hipster points for adopting one. Just make sure to force sterilize them (AKA reassign gender), in case they escape their incel guardrails.

    • Anon, I understand your deep concern for the objects that you reference as “birthed” and I think there is a solution that can be found within Islam, the world’s most Peaceful of Religions. As you surely know, Islam has a Cherished Tradition of Child Rape, which dates back over 1,000 years. As an aside, I can speak of this Cherishment based on my personal experience with my four wives–ages 8, 9, and two at 11–all of whom I purchased in Kabul last year.

In a nutshell, perhaps rather than butchering these “birthed” objects that are unwanted, they can be organized by our Wonderful Imams into a collective Common Good group that can provide Child Rape Services to Deeply Religious and Peaceful Men like me. I see the demand for this daily, particularly in the UK, where Islamic gangs have organized themselves to rape youngsters willy-nilly for decades, and have been encouraged to do so by Strong Leaders like Keir Starmer. I must say that I always amaze myself when I think about the multitude of Global Solutions that Islam offers to us all. Allahu Akbar!

    • Anon, I have found a kindred spirit for you and hoping you are able to contribute to the fundraiser for Lindsey Clancy (see link below). Unfortunately, it’s too late to add her “birthed” objects to my new Child Rape Services Program, which I described to you previously, but I am sure that Lindsey would appreciate any support you can offer her for butchering her children. Allahu Akbar!
