Today, let’s consider another 9/11 anniversary article from the same paper: “Facing Islamophobia, Mamdani Keeps Focus on 9/11 Victims”.
Because he is afraid of Islamophobia, the NYT tells us, Mayor Mamdani isn’t doing the things that he actually wants to do and instead is occupied with considering the New Yorkers who were killed by his fellow Muslims. The NYT reminds us that it wasn’t only Mamdani’s aunt who was a victim of 9/11:
… for Mr. Mamdani, the dual identities of being a young mayor and a Muslim has brought an added layer of pressure and scrutiny. He was 9 years old when the attacks took place and had been living in the United States for two years after moving with his family from Uganda. He has called the day a horrific tragedy for all Americans and one where a Muslim like him was officially marked as an “other.”
Do we need a word that means “fear of Islamophobia”? How about Islamophobiaphobia? Then we could say, “Because of Islamophobiaphobia, Ayatollah Mamdani did not organize a River to the Sea #FreePalestine event at City Hall as he had hoped to.”
