Ideas for flying around New England

A Swiss surgeon recently came to Boston for a conference. East Coast Aero Club prices are 1/3 to 1/2 what it costs to rent a plane in Switzerland so he decided to spend a week before the conference flying the Cirrus SR20 3-4 hours each day, with periodic cigarette breaks (regrettably the Cirrus is placarded against smoking, thus rendering it less than ideal for a European physician; in the good old days, four-seat GA planes had ashtrays!).

I thought I would share the set of proposed flights in case it is useful to others.

  1. The smoker can probably smoke all he wants in China. He will have lots of company considering that 60% of male Chinese doctors are smokers, which is the highest proportion in the world.

Chinese commercial pilots still smoke cigarettes/e-cigs onboard.

Air China will fire pilots in e-cigarette smoking fiasco that caused plane to drop 25,000-feet in 10 minutes. Aviation authority points finger at co-pilot who while trying to stop smoke from reaching cabin, accidentally turned off air-conditioning unit, causing oxygen levels to drop

  2. With a little bit of stretch on the SR20, he could go south doing the Hudson River Corridor, continue on to KFFA to see the newly opened visitor center, and still make it back to KBED in one day before dark. This would make it more like an aviation pilgrim, and less of a college tour.

  3. Thanks, Finn. This particular pilot had already done the Hudson River Corridor and was more interested in seeing what was specifically in New England.
