“‘It’s Been Devastating’: UMass Amherst Students Suspended For Not Wearing Masks Off-Campus” (CBS):
Andover parents Kristin and Scott are speaking out on behalf of their daughter. She along with two of her friends are freshmen at UMass Amherst. A picture posted on social media of the three friends not wearing masks outside was handed over to the university and that has landed them in serious trouble.
“There was a photo sent to the administration of these girls outside off campus on a Saturday. This is why they lost a whole semester of their schooling,” Kristin said.
Since their suspension, the students have been studying remotely at their homes. However, last week they were cut off from virtual learning. They were not allowed to take their finals, so parents say their kids’ semester was a total loss, both financially and academically.
“That negates this whole semester $16,000 of money and they have to reapply for next semester. But they missed housing registration,” Scott said.
UMass Amherst released a statement saying: “Students received a number of public health messages this semester that emphasized the importance of following public health protocols and the consequences for not complying, and those messages were also shared on UMass social media channels.”
The Instagram post that betrayed their refusal to observe all of the rituals of the Church of Shutdown all of the time:
(Maybe they can be replaced with masked BIPOC?)
Given the depicted weather it seems that these three might well have been vaccinated at the time the photo was taken.
Stockholm Syndrome among the other invulnerable-to-covid 20-year-olds:
Students on campus say the rules have been tight this year but for good reason. “Maybe a little harsh but like I understand it because you’re not supposed to be doing that,” one student told WBZ Friday night.
The spirited hippies of the 1960s who said “Don’t trust anyone over 30” have been succeeded by college students happy to do whatever Dr. Fauci (age 80, i.e., pretty close to the median age for a COVID-19 death in Maskachusetts) tells them to.

What does UMass Amherst care if these kids and their parents lose $16 grand and a full semester and have their names dragged through the mud for making what was, at worst, a tiny infraction that could have been handled a million different ways?
Those are capitalist pig kids with capitalist parents, in a capitalist system that needs to be smashed.
“UMass Amherst: Be Revolutionary [Comrades!]”
https://www.umass.edu/gateway/feature/be-revolutionary
“We are the revolutionaries of today. Not waiting for change, but creating it. At the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a revolutionary spirit runs through our veins. It inspires us. To think in new ways. To challenge convention. Not to simply be different, but to actually make a difference. We embrace the freedom to dream bigger. We are pioneers, builders, unconventional doers – committed to the relentless pursuit of progress. The University of Massachusetts Amherst. BE REVOLUTIONARY.”
That was clearly a St. Patrick’s Day celebration, also, judging from the t-shirts. Religion must go, intolerable. They had no excuse, it’s a double infraction. Nay, a triple infraction because these young women seem to identify as women, and have picked up on some style and dress trends for women. Bare midriffs, torn “distressed” jeans. They look like women! How dare they!
Now they can live their lives without privilege and without the $16,000, which UMass Amherst will gladly pocket so it can give it to some true progressives.
Who else except colleges can charge exuberant take out of the blue fees (for almost nothing at UMass, those who are not footballers) and swindle customers from them at will. College administrators are little Madoffs who are actually making off with others’ money consequences – free. I think consumer protection laws and and financial protection law might not work here, but they should, those swindlers belong to a super-max. The girls and their parents must sue based on freedom of religion ,laws, as it was clearly St. Patrick’s Day festivities and Supreme Court so far decided all coronavirus lock down cases in favor of disobeying plaintiffs.
Amazing. The words “heretics” and “religion” aren’t even metaphors or exaggeration here. Nobody gets Covid outdoors, and there was no actual threat whatsoever; the girls are not being penalized for doing anything actually risky, but merely for disobeying the stupid and arbitrary orders of a demonically evil religion.
And the commenter above is right; the university’s ability to swindle students out of tens of thousands of dollars is pure evil. Burn Amherst to the ground and bring in the best exorcists to cast out the demonic souls of its administrators. Eternity in Hell won’t be punishment enough for the modern university apparatchik.
Wonder how much of the blue state to red state emigration has been and will continue to be a function of people wanting to live in a freer society. COVID has sure put the divide into relief.
Does the signaling model of education make this reaction more necessary? I mean, what says compliant more than keeping up the mask standards?
Really stupid of UMass Amherst or any other university for doing this. One strike and you are out? Really? And the “out” here is very severe, they were suspended from the university for a year! I would love to see this kind of one strike and you are out applied to ALL other policies that universities have. Lets see how will that play out.
Btw, IANAL but those students and their families need to sue the university. The students were suspended with no warning and their action be it intentionally or not did not cause any harm to others nor it could have. It is not like they were running around and spitting on those around them.
The parents are insane. If they loved their kids and had any common sense they would take them far from such insanity, not grovel and pay more to send them back. Poor kids. Yes the university is evil, but people have telling you that about universities for a long time. Stop acting surprised, you were told.
I guess conservatives succeeded by refusing to wear masks, thereby making liberals want to wear masks all the time and ultimately ruining the lives of liberals. Will they ever be able to walk around without a mask?
Those chicks put the donk in the badonkadonk. I don’t think they need any more all-you-can-eat starch at the U cafeteria, so maybe the ban isn’t all bad. I swear there’s some gravitational force among college girls where the bed-busting midnight heavies always wind up revolving around each other.
