Internment camps for the unvaccinated?

Nobody loved my previous modest proposal: Euthanize the unvaccinated?

Here’s another idea for keeping the righteous safe from those who deny #Science… internment camps for the unvaccinated. Korematsu v. United States affirmed FDR’s decision to send Japanese-Americans into camps. World War II was a bad situation, but Japanese-Americans were a minor and speculative threat. Nonetheless, the Supreme Court held that the Constitution did not apply #BecauseEmergency.

Consider that COVID-19, at least according to our media, has already killed far more Americans than died in World War II (and the death of an 82-year-old with diabetes and cancer is actually more tragic than the death of a healthy 18-year-old soldier). So the emergency is far more severe right now than whatever we had concerning us in 1942 when Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066. This is certainly no time to let purported Constitutional rights interfere with public health.

We are also informed that the unvaccinated are 99.2 percent responsible for spreading coronaplague and for COVID-19 deaths. The unvaccinated are a clear and present danger to themselves and others.

Isn’t the logical next step placing the unvaccinated into internment camps for their own protection? “Imperfect Vaccination Can Enhance the Transmission of Highly Virulent Pathogens” (PLOS, 2015):

Could some vaccines drive the evolution of more virulent pathogens? Conventional wisdom is that natural selection will remove highly lethal pathogens if host death greatly reduces transmission. Vaccines that keep hosts alive but still allow transmission could thus allow very virulent strains to circulate in a population. Here we show experimentally that immunization of chickens against Marek’s disease virus enhances the fitness of more virulent strains, making it possible for hyperpathogenic strains to transmit. Immunity elicited by direct vaccination or by maternal vaccination prolongs host survival but does not prevent infection, viral replication or transmission, thus extending the infectious periods of strains otherwise too lethal to persist. Our data show that anti-disease vaccines that do not prevent transmission can create conditions that promote the emergence of pathogen strains that cause more severe disease in unvaccinated hosts.

The only way to keep the unvaccinated safe from the super-COVID that we’re breeding by vaccinating those who were never at significant risk (with an imperfect vaccine) is to place the unvaccinated into camps where they can be isolated from the vaccinated population.

Readers: What do you think of this idea? And could Andrew Cuomo be repurposed to run one of the camps? He has experience ordering the infected into nursing homes. (But if he hadn’t done that, the hospital situation could have been worse; see Our hero’s hospital is full (but not with patients who should be there).) Maybe Cuomo could be tasked with rounding up the unvaccinated and ordering them into the Protection Camps. If that’s too big a task for one person, Cuomo could be in charge of outreach to young unvaccinated women.

Loosely related… a fixer-upper in Bodie, California, in the same dry Eastern Sierra environment as Manzanar.

  1. I’m all for internment camps, alternatively one could send the renegades to a Silicon Valley corporation that also functions as a reeducation camp. Two for the price of one.

The picture is phenomenal, it reminds me of a van Gogh painting. I think I prefer analog photography.

    • The good news is that their war against US Citizens will probably be similarly effective as their war against the Taliban.

  2. Euthanasia was slightly exaggerated. A milder version of internment camps is already implemented here in France. People without ‘green pass’ are not allowed to go to restaurants, big shopping malls, sports events, festivals (even outdoors), cinemas, theaters, museums, sports facilities, swimming pools, amusement parks, even zoos, to take long-distance public transport, are not even allowed to enter hospitals.

One has a green pass if vaccinated, or had a negative test in the past 48h, or had covid in the past 6 months. (Apparently the immunity one gets from having contracted the disease lasts less than that obtained by vaccination.) Tests are free in France, Germany, and probably in most of the EU but the expected next turn of the screw is to phase out free tests the coming months.

The internment of American-Japanese happened in war-time. The President of France insisted 6 times in his speech at the beginning of the spread of covid in France that ‘we are at war.’ (I doubt that the virus has acknowledged the French declaration of war.) So internment of the enemies within doesn’t sound so implausible.

  3. Short notes of an occasional sleepy insomniac: It occurred to me tonight as I ambled across the room for reasons best left undescribed that Christians (among others) are regularly persecuted for their magical belief system. It holds (as many of them understand it) that life begins at conception, that it is bestowed upon each of us by a divine being, and that the only being who has the ability to take that life away is God, among its many other outmoded and obviously destructive and risible contortions of Reason.

In our increasingly secular, Western, illiberal ‘democracy’ (which many believe is just an oligarchy of one kind or another despite all the window dressing and the noise we generate shouting about it) we like to talk about how powerful our system of Constitutional checks and balances and the Rule of Law is – and how great it could be if we just believed more in one political party or the other. It’s not difficult to discern which Party is currently judged to be the ascendant in this regard among most of the respectable voices across our fruited plain.

And yet we witness with very clear eyes – and often encourage! – exactly the sorts of things @Adso von Melk describes; we submit without much complaint or resistance to the 69 extra-legislative Governor’s Orders in the cradle and first crucible of American Liberty, we witness and perpetrate countless other such ironies and debasements of that liberty over the past year and a half; and we do all of this while retaining, somehow, our unflinching belief that our system is not – in fact, if not in spirit – just but the old Rule of Man in clever disguise as Rule of Law.

And it can all be taken away.

Not great, I know, but it’s 2:52 a.m. and I couldn’t get any rest tonight.

    • The medical scientists at Facebook were right all along! (From March: https://philip.greenspun.com/blog/2021/03/13/facebook-fact-check/ )

And the full FDA approval (just like for Vioxx; see https://www.npr.org/2007/11/10/5470430/timeline-the-rise-and-fall-of-vioxx ) makes my Protection Camps idea even more ripe for implementation!

Finally, there is a bit of irony in the fact that the Pfizer shot is officially approved right around the time that people are discovering that SARS-CoV-2 has evolved beyond the Pfizer shot. Viruses are not only smarter, but also apparently much more nimble than humans!

    • GB: That is a great question! If Pfizer is approved and the other vaccines are emergency use only, how can it be ethical to give someone a vaccine other than Pfizer? (Let’s assume that the person in question is 65 years old and therefore has sufficient COVID-19 risk to justify an attempted intervention with a vaccine to begin with.)
