Department of You Can’t Make This Stuff Up… Carnegie-Mellon has released renderings of its new home in Miami. It’s a massive sea-level almost-all-glass pavilion that will generate a ton of CO2 every minute (for A/C):
For 20 years CMU’s Nobel-winning Climate Doomers told us that hurricanes of never-before-experienced intensity would be ravaging Miami at least once per year. If forced to move to the Hurricane Belt, you’d expect the elites of Pittsburgh to build themselves something like the German U-boat base in Saint-Nazaire (26-foot-thick roof). What do we see instead? The folks who said that everyone in Miami was going to be killed by hurricanes or driven out by rising seas are going to park themselves inside a literal glass house (at sea level, of course!).
What would a structure in South Florida built by people who took their own predictions seriously look like?
This glass is exactly the point. As elites move to Florida, peddlers of elite education move after them. It’s going to have to be built from ultra-reinforced expensive glass. Showing to the plebs that they can afford it, and plebs can’t.
Sure, it will be impact glass, but I don’t think it can ever approach the strength of 2-3′ of concrete. The point of NAP building is to provide uninterrupted communication, the point of this campus is to show opulence so elites and wanna-be elites are thinking that they are getting good deal by being separated from unwashed plebs. Then they are going to virtue-signal when some billionaire is going to donate carbon credits to them in exchange for getting his dumb children “educated” since they can’t get in on their own scores.
The more interesting question is why build it at all – with the advent of AI how do they hope to provide any relevant “education”? By the time this campus is complete and first students are supposed to graduate, no relevant skill will be able to taught to do anything economically useful.

Phil, what do you make of the most recent army report regarding the DC MidAir collision?
They are saying that the helicopter did not have a collision avoidance system, the pilots likely could not see the plane due to the city’s lights, and had inaccurate altitude readings.
(Why is the army flying a helicopter on a supposedly routine route if the pilots are going to be blinded by the city lights each time? Wouldn’t that cause many more disasters than just one?)

I’m not sure that the BlackHawk’s altimeter was really that inaccurate. “after discovering the crashed Black Hawk’s ADS-B Out system, which broadcasts its location, hadn’t been working for some time” is disturbing. “The military pilots’ night-vision goggles also restricted their view and made it hard to spot the plane amid the city lights.” makes sense. The helicopter route was designed without considering NVGs, I’m pretty sure. Probably NVGs shouldn’t have been allowed on the route in clear conditions due to the restriction of peripheral vision and the fact that there is plenty of city illumination.

@Anonymous, Nobody should be watching it, that is for sure. More importantly, something like this should never be livestreamed. That said, I have seen far worse things online and young minds have been exposed to them, too. Even daytime TV shows sometimes feature content I wouldn’t want young children to see. And don’t get me started on shoot-them-up games or movies.
So, if you are concerned about this public execution being livestreamed, are you seriously telling me you don’t see all the other equally violent, publicly available “executions” constantly being put out there for everyone to watch? Or do those somehow get a free pass?

I’m personally too squeamish, but for most of human history executions carried out by a ruler or government have been public. @philg, I am not opposing your point. I am highlighting the contradiction: Liberals are quick to remind us of violence, particularly gun violence, and insist that the government must eliminate guns. Yet they have remarkably little to say about the other forms of violence we are exposed to every day, publicly available for anyone, including children, to see.

Samue: the mostly peaceful Nidal Malik Hasan couldn’t have been executed on January 20, 2025 because he had an appeal pending at the time. The Supreme Court, though, rejected it on March 31, 2025 (Wokipedia). So you’re right that the delay is tough to explain. That said, the U.S. seems to operate quite slowly on these death sentences (20-30 years after a mostly peaceful murder is the usual death date and Nidal Malik Hasan’s peaceful jihad was only 17 years ago). If the mostly peaceful unarmed flydubai pilot is sentenced to death by the UAE, as some have suggested, I’m willing to bet that the execution won’t be 20 years from when he reached for the crash axe.
Maybe it will be botched like the one in Tennessee and we will have a slew of entertaining news stories. I see the news is now talking about her walking and eating, but facing some cognitive challenges, as though she is some sort of infant or elderly person, and not someone that the collective decided to sentence to the realm beyond. That would certainly make for good television!
Samue, you raise an interesting issue. A couple thoughts:
1) Low probability the DOW will “botch” it.
2) Perhaps Tennessee and other less-than-competent states will outsource these “events” going forward.
3) Perhaps there is also a revenue opportunity for taxpayers, either as a pay-per-view (like UFC used to do), or a subscription model (like with Paramount now).
Thank you, Department of Defense. With the recent creation of Skydance, I doubt they will be able to diversify their revenue stream into that realm by the time of the premonished event. Perhaps Disney can be the first mover?
