High gas prices reflected in car rental rates

A recent interaction on the Hertz web site, trying to rent a car in Seattle for an upcoming trip. The 33 mpg car is $32/day. The pavement-melting gas-hogging 19-mpg SUV? Consumers are so alarmed about paying high gasoline prices that they’re willing to pay $401/day in order to burn twice as much fuel.

  1. If you need to rent a car, the Costco Travel rates usually beat what’s available through other sites. Worth checking out if you are a Costco Member. Disclosure: I am a Costco employee (but I’ve followed Phil longer).

    • Costco is 2 hours from me, that wouldn’t be a local option. Looks like Seattle proper has only one location.

Maybe the SUX has armor plating and bulletproof glass, as precautions for dealing with the natives, explaining the extra cost. Did you check the “VIP” box in the online form? The last time I was in Seatown my bosses rented me a Kia, cheapskates — but wait, it had the best windshield wiper system I had ever used. Maybe Mayor Katie has a spare e-bike with an umbrella holder she can spare you,

    • Disclaimer: I don’t directly own any Costco stock. I used to like their dried blueberries and apricots, but 4 hours isn’t worth it. I would say “build it and they will come” but this backward-ass town I live in can’t even support a Chipotle or Qdoba. Disclaimer disclaimer: I don’t directly own any Chipotle or Qdoba stock. Access to an Ikea for me at this point is a pipe dream. Dislaimer disclaimer disclaimer: No Ikea stock for me either, not even sure that is an option.

    • NH: LOL! No IKEA stock! How are you supporting G’s country as far as investing is concerned then? I guess the idea is to support a group of people you like on all fronts, right?

    • > Access to an Ikea for me at this point is a pipe dream…No Ikea stock for me either, not even sure that is an option.

Edit: Access to Greta for me at this point is a pipe dream…No Greta stock for me either, not even sure that is an option (I think her award money is closely held).

I’ve been concentrating on these three:

Hoping one will invest in my his and hers (or hers and hers) panties startup (see Phil’s next post).

LOL! Let’s keep it hush-hush, and the competition low, but many of them are super feminine! It’s like meeting a character from the Victorian-era play, :D.

I thought Hippies were into chilling, smoking weed, and free love, not minting money from unconventional sexual stuff!

      > not minting money from unconventional sexual stuff!

Seed money, as it were, for other ventures. Weed *is always* the end game with my kind, Phil-bro.

  2. Probably related to demand for large vehicles during the time you are renting – certainly not normal. I am renting a suburban at seatac for 7 days for $500 in a few weeks. Well not counting the ridiculous taxes for cars at seattac that will nearly double the price.

Most of my recent rentals have had fuel efficient cars cost more – especially in europe.

    • Particularly higher rates during family vacations to the mountains in summer. There are lots of dirt roads up there.
